Dan Farley started Thompson Surgical in 1983. While earning his degree at Michigan State University, an industrial design course led to a brainstorming session with his neurosurgeon father. The result: A design for a table mounted retractor that could be used on anterior cervical fusions. Dan’s interest in surgical instrument design was sparked. After earning his degree, he landed a sales position with Codman in the Chicago area. Recognizing a need for his retractor, Farley left Codman and began marketing his own idea whereupon he met Richard Thompson MD, the inventor of the Thompson Retractor. Dr. Thompson made Dan an offer he couldn't refuse and Dan's mission of continuing the Thompson Retractor legacy began.
Dan’s mission is to offer the world's best retractor and the best possible service to our many loyal customers. He has been awarded numerous patents on developments including One Piece Universal Joints, Cam Action Universal Joints, Sterile Mount Rail Clamps, Locking Interchangeable Handles, Angling Retractor Handles, and Folding Retractor Frame Arms. These patents have contributed to making "Uncompromised Exposure" synonymous with the Thompson Retractor.
